Training of Educators in Careers Education, Advice, Management and Guidance in Rodrigues

The Rodrigues Regional Assembly in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) and Careers Guidance Service of the Ministry of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training is organising a two-day training programme on Careers Education, Information, Advice, Management and Guidance for a batch of 45 Senior Educators/Educators from secondary schools and TVET institutions in Rodrigues.

Rectors will also be invited on the first day of the workshop to get an overview of the career toolkit. Each school will receive two to three copies of the toolkit.

The training programme will be held as follows:

23rd - 24th November 2022

09 00 hrs – 14 30 hrs

Cotton Bay Hotel, Rodrigues

The career toolkit has been developed by the HRDC in collaboration with the Careers Guidance Service to support senior educators in the development of a career guidance plan for the year. The support of an expert from Curtin University, Mauritius was also sought while drafting the toolkit.

The toolkit will be used during the workshop in Rodrigues to familiarise the participants with the exercises. It will be a basis to assist senior educators and educators to mount career-related activities at the level of schools. This will also be an opportunity for them to customise a career guidance plan for their own schools targeted at different levels of students.

Initially some 160 senior educators in Mauritius were trained in 2 batches of 80 participants in October 2017 and October 2018. This training programme aims to empower senior educators to provide careers education and career management information to their students.

A presentation will be conducted by the HRDC to disseminate key information on skills and provide an overview of the career toolkit. Industry interventions from the ICT and Tourism sectors will also be a key component of the training programme. A session will be dedicated to the filling up of the calendar of activities for the coming year and the participants will be empowered to devise a customised career education plan for their schools.

Nine career planning tools/instruments will be explained and practised with Senior Educators/Educators, facilitated by officers from the HRDC and Careers Guidance Service. This will comprise:

  • group activities;
  • discussions for self-exploration with regard to career options and self-reflection;
  • role play with different scenarios;
  • decision making tools;
  • quiz; and
  • self-assessment questionnaires.
